Want Simpler, Cheaper and Greener Energy?

Eco-Friendly… Because it Just Makes Sense

Here at Base Surf Lodge we are taking on the most important challenge of all. To become eco-friendly. We not only want to reduce our own footprint on this planet, but we also strive to be a positive influence to all our guests, family and friends alike. This is in hope that together we can turn our small changes into a huge positive outcome for our environment. Our aim over the course of the next few years is to look at all aspects of the business and our home life to see how we can start turning ideas into reality, for a greener future.

Green Energy

One of the major issues we face as a guest house is the amount of electricity we use. The lodge sleeps up to 24 guests per night, 26 with myself and Rob living upstairs. For one household that is a lot of phones which need charging, a lot of kettles boiling and a lot of lights being switched on. With energy efficient light bulbs, communal lights on a timer and a more efficient kettle we are reducing our electricity usage, but this is simply not enough. We have accepted that our energy bill will always be high but what we cannot accept is that our money goes to the big energy companies who completely push aside the importance of our planet. With this in mind our first thought for greener energy is to get solar panels for the lodge.

Solar Success

Living in Cornwall we are very lucky to be surrounded by countryside where positive changes can be seen daily. Solar panels on roofs, fields and fields of green energy solar farms and even our local pub is off-grid. For good reason, solar power is becoming increasingly popular. When building our DIY campervan we put a solar panel on the roof and it amazes us still that our phones get charged from the sun and that we can be self-sufficient in the middle of nowhere. With solar panels having been in the market for many years now, competition has made them better with more power and efficiency. Unfortunately, however, with the government cuts on green energy subsidies, the initial investment in solar power has increased. Therefore this is something we will need to save up for. In the meantime we are looking for an immediate positive change.

Lightbulb Moment

Through the powers of social media, we came across Bulb. A green energy company with our planet in mind. Bulb ensures 100% of the electricity they supply is renewably sourced and for every unit of electricity used, a unit is produced and put on the grid. This alone was enough to make us want to change to Bulb. Not only, though, do Bulb offer an immediate solution to our own green energy, they are also the cheapest energy providers for us and many other homes. They stand above other green energy suppliers as they invest in new technology to make cheaper green energy and then give the discounts to us, the public. This truly shows that they care about the environment as they want more and more people to be a part of the ‘renewable energy revolution’. And above all, they did all the hard work for us. We were signed up in 2 minutes online. They contacted our previous energy provider for us to cancel our policy and even paid our cancellation fee. It could not have been easier. To top it off, Bulb offer huge incentives to spread the word about their greener energy alternatives. You receive £50 off your bill for every person you recommend to use Bulb. Each person recommended also receives £50 off their first bill. This is obviously great for their business, to get as many people on board as possible, but more importantly it’s helping protect our planet.

Having changed to Bulb, we can rest assure that all lights left on, phones left on charge and kettles twice boiled are powered by renewable sources. We do know, however, that there is still loads we can be doing to reduce our carbon footprint. Our next big challenge is to tackle the amount of plastic ourselves and our guests waste weekly.

Picture Organic Clothing

As surfers and skiers, we are always on the look out for the best gear. Wetsuits need to be warm, flexible, and durable. Outerwear for skiing needs to be waterproof, tough and comfortable. Style, fit and price tag are also important factors, but what about the impact on our planet?

The beauty of surfing and skiing, is the constant connection you have with nature. Whether you are gliding down a wave or floating over fresh powder, you are immersed in a natural phenomenon. The sad news however, is the natural world as we know it is changing rapidly. From pollution in our oceans to climate change affecting our snowfall, we are seeing these drastic changes first hand. Using paper straws and re-usable coffee cups is certainly a step in the right direction but it’s simply not enough.

Picture Organic Clothing - Base Surf Lodge

Well known ways to be more eco-friendly include taking less plane journeys, cutting down on single-use plastics and using renewable energy, but do we stop to think about what we wear. The impact of our clothes, wetsuits and technical gear on the planet is not often acknowledged. In fact, the majority of wetsuits are made from petrochemicals and most ski jackets are covered in PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals). These chemicals, which wash off into lakes and rivers, are found in 95% of Americans. These are just two examples of many unknown, brutal truths. Therefore if we truly want to help protect our planet, we need to consider an eco-alternative for our everyday attire.

Picture Organic Clothing are a French brand who make eco-friendly clothes for mountain and ocean lovers. Their slogan ‘Ride, Protect, Share’ says it all. As snowboarders, surfers and paragliders, the three Picture Organic Clothing founders have created a brand for people to enjoy the outdoors with minimal impact on our planet. They are whole heartedly focused on producing good quality, technical clothing and gear, which is as environmentally friendly as possible, but still affordable.

Since Picture was created, our desire was to offer eco-designed products, keeping up in prices with the competition who offer no eco-friendly option. – Picture Organic Clothing

Understandably they have encountered difficulties in being 100% perfect, like us all. However, in 10 years of being established they have done some amazing things. All of their technical products are minimum 50% recycled polyester or 95% organic GOTS certified cotton (remaining 5 % is recycled cotton). Any of their recycled polyester is essentially old plastic bottles (approx. 50 water bottles/men’s large ski jacket). For the majority of their wetsuit foam, they use old car tyres. They use 100% recycled polyester for the inside and outside lining. Plus they are using eco water-based glue. So, when wearing a Picture wetsuit you can rest assure that you are doing your bit to protect the oceans.

An organic farm produces 94% less carbon emissions than conventional. – Picture Organic Clothing

Being a relatively small business in the market has meant Picture can afford to take more risks. With this, they are extremely innovative and are always pushing the limits of what’s possible in the outdoor sports industry. Examples of their efforts include, making their whole range PFC Free, creating bio-sourced mid-layers which are completely biodegradable (see below), using scrap fabrics to minimise their waste, and many more.

Today, our goal is to be fully committed to being responsible with the whole cycle of our products: the design, raw materials, the making, the use, the 2nd life and end of life. – Picture Organic Clothing

As well as doing their bit for the planet, Picture Organic Clothing’s products are also amazing quality and look the part. Their wetsuits are extremely comfortable and flexible, especially compared to other environmentally friendly options on the market. Picture’s ski/snowboard gear is highly technical. They use eco-friendly waterproofing, recycled and even recyclable shells. Plus a clever I-Fit System in the pants to make them last longer. In all of their lines, they have a great range of designs, from the bright and colourful to the more simplistic. Plus they have an amazing range of everyday clothes and accessories. So, as well as helping protect our planet by choosing an eco-friendly brand like Picture Organic Clothing, we can also look and feel good doing the things we love.

Base Surf Lodge x Picture Organic Clothing

Here at Base Surf Lodge, we are extremely proud to have partnered up with Picture Organic Clothing and to be working as ambassadors with them. To be representing such an amazing brand with values which reflect our own, is an absolute pleasure. We will be hosting some of the Picture Family this year at Boardmasters. During which, you can test their wetsuits out for yourselves, just head to their stall on Fistral Beach.

Be A True Surfer From Day 1

Are you totally new to surfing? Have you surfed a little and would like to refresh? Or are you experienced and keen to take your surfing to the next level?

From your very first day with us, we will give you all the tools and information you need to be a true surfer, no matter what your level. This doesn’t just mean learning how to standup on a board or ride across a green wave. We will teach you the all the foundations, for you to then take your surfing as far as you desire. After 3, 4 or 5 nights with us, we guarantee you will leave here with more confidence, more awareness of your own body, a greater understanding of waves and the ocean, plus you will have developed your surfing skills to be able to take it to the next level.

As super passionate surfers ourselves, we are constantly adapting and improving our coaching techniques to give you the best possible surfing experience. Our lessons are dynamic and based on a modern approach of learning to surf. We use training tools such as balance boards and surfskates. We incorporate a lot of land-based training and movement skill practice into our surf camps. Plus, we use video coaching to take a closer look into your individual performance, giving you a greater understanding of how to improve in your next surf session.

Have Fun Falling In

Surfing is by the far the most enjoyable and wholesome way to spend your day, yet every surfer knows it can be frustrating at times. The surf and weather conditions are always changing, your energy levels rise and fall and even your present mood has an affect on how you surf. With this in mind, our surf camps focus a lot on land-based surf practice, so that you can get the most enjoyment out of your time surfing in the ocean.

Land-based surf practice gives you the opportunity to learn each phase of surfing in a controlled environment. As generally we all spend more time on land than in the ocean, this approach will open up way more opportunities for you to improve your surfing, than you ever thought possible. No matter what stage of surfing you are at, we will teach you the correct movement patterns for you to practice and perfect any surfing manoeuvre. With a focus on maintaining good form, we ensure these stages of learning will stay consistent as your surfing progresses. By taking your time and repeating each phase, you will develop muscle memory and gain a sense of what it should feel like in the water. Then, once a single movement is mastered on land, you can begin to link into the next movement and slowly build up your land-surfing repertoire. This will keep you one step ahead of the rest, when taking it from land and into the waves.

In the ocean, the conditions are always changing, so there is naturally a lot more to think about. If you try and learn a totally new skill in this open environment, it usually takes a longer time and is harder to perfect. Whereas, if you have already developed the muscle memory on the beach, you will immediately receive your own feedback as to whether it feels good or not. Also, by keeping the emphasis of learning on the beach, you can go into the ocean with a more relaxed mindset and focus mainly on having fun. And this really is the key to success, as when we are happy and in a playful state, i.e. having fun, we are relaxed and more likely to try new things. When learning a new skill, the more attempts you make, the more opportunities you give yourself to succeed. Highlighting the importance of having fun falling in.
