Have Fun Falling In

Surfing is by the far the most enjoyable and wholesome way to spend your day, yet every surfer knows it can be frustrating at times. The surf and weather conditions are always changing, your energy levels rise and fall and even your present mood has an affect on how you surf. With this in mind, our surf camps focus a lot on land-based surf practice, so that you can get the most enjoyment out of your time surfing in the ocean.

Land-based surf practice gives you the opportunity to learn each phase of surfing in a controlled environment. As generally we all spend more time on land than in the ocean, this approach will open up way more opportunities for you to improve your surfing, than you ever thought possible. No matter what stage of surfing you are at, we will teach you the correct movement patterns for you to practice and perfect any surfing manoeuvre. With a focus on maintaining good form, we ensure these stages of learning will stay consistent as your surfing progresses. By taking your time and repeating each phase, you will develop muscle memory and gain a sense of what it should feel like in the water. Then, once a single movement is mastered on land, you can begin to link into the next movement and slowly build up your land-surfing repertoire. This will keep you one step ahead of the rest, when taking it from land and into the waves.

In the ocean, the conditions are always changing, so there is naturally a lot more to think about. If you try and learn a totally new skill in this open environment, it usually takes a longer time and is harder to perfect. Whereas, if you have already developed the muscle memory on the beach, you will immediately receive your own feedback as to whether it feels good or not. Also, by keeping the emphasis of learning on the beach, you can go into the ocean with a more relaxed mindset and focus mainly on having fun. And this really is the key to success, as when we are happy and in a playful state, i.e. having fun, we are relaxed and more likely to try new things. When learning a new skill, the more attempts you make, the more opportunities you give yourself to succeed. Highlighting the importance of having fun falling in.
