Frequently Asked Questions

What meals are included in the surf camp package?

We provide you with a Bed & Breakfast type holiday where breakfast is the only meal included everyday. We then also provide a bonus barbecue, as a nice way for you to get to know and to socialise with everyone else on your surf camp.

Being situated in the heart of Newquay, we are spoilt for choice for food options in town. So for your lunches and other dinners there is everything from reasonably priced sandwich and pasty bars to delicious high end restaurants and every thing in between. There is also a Sainsburys supermarket just behind the lodge, where you can pick up any supplies you need.

Who is this surf camp for?

At Base we welcome everyone. Individuals, couples, families and small groups of friends.

We have a selection of room types for you to choose from, which include a double bed room, a twin bunk room, a private 3 or 4-person bunk room and a shared 4-person bunk room for solo travellers.

Is it ok that I’m a total beginner?

Yes absolutely and you’ve come to right place for the best surfing experience. From your very first day with us we will teach you all the foundations you need to take your surfing as far as you desire. You will leave here with more confidence, a greater awareness of your own body, knowledge and understanding of surf theory and equipment, ocean safety, plus the lasting memories of riding waves in the Atlantic Ocean.

We will provide you with all the best surf equipment, including warm wetsuits and beginner friendly surfboards. You will be guided through all the stages of surfing and supported through your progression by our small team of expert and friendly coaches.

I can already surf green waves but keen to progress, is this camp for me?

The short answer: Yes absolutely!

At Base, we split the groups into different levels, often with our beginners in the whitewater and our intermediates outback. For the more advanced surfers, like yourself, we do a lot of land based training as well as in-water practice. We use our movement room to show you a range of drills you can practice for each individual manoeuvre you are wanting to work on. Whether you’re wanting to get smoother at the take-off, practice efficient speed generation, or develop good muscle memory for a cutback or top-turn, we have specific drills to help build your surfing skill level on land. This then significantly improves and speeds up your surfing progression in the waves.

We also use video coaching as a tool for you to watch your own surfing. We analyse the footage with you to see your progression and visualise how you can improve further.

What do I need to bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sun cream, beach shoes/flip-flops, toiletries and all other essentials you’d usually take on holiday. We provide surf equipment for anyone who needs it, for no additional cost.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

Yes, we can cater for all dietary requirements as long as you give us plenty of notice. We are experimental ourselves, and have even had long stints of being veggie, vegan and even keto for a while. So, we have plenty of experience cooking up a delicious feast for everyone.

Do I need my own wetsuit and surfboard?

No need for additional wetsuit and surfboard hire. Thick, warm wetsuits and a variety of soft top surfboards are included in your surf camp package.

If you have your own, you are very welcome to bring them along. We have hanging rails for drying wetsuits and board racks for board storage.

If you are thinking of buying a board or suit, we are always around to give our advice on what equipment we think would be best for you.

What is the max group size I can book for?

Our max group size is 4 guests per booking.

With a mix of individuals, couples and small groups, making up to 10 guests in total, our surf camps are extremely welcoming and sociable for everyone.

If you have a special request to book for more than 4 guests please contact us directly.

Are there any age restrictions?

The minimum age limit is 10 years old to join our surf camps. Any child younger than 16 years old needs to be accompanied by a surfing parent/responsible adult.

A maximum of two 16 or 17 year olds may join our surf camps without an accompanying adult, as long as we receive signed Parental Consent Forms.

Everyone aged 18+ are welcome with no maximum age limit 🙂

What time can I check-in?

You can check-in any time of day as we have nothing scheduled for the surf camp on that day. If you could just give us at least 48 hours notice and keep us updated with any changes to your arrival time. Your room will be ready from 2pm at the latest. If you arrive earlier that 2pm we’ll give you a set of keys, then you can leave your belongings with us and head out to enjoy the rest of your day with no time constraints.

What time do I need to check-out by?

You can check-out anytime of day as long as you have paid your remaining balance before you depart and you give us 24 hours notice of your plans. You will need to vacate your rooms by 1pm but you have access to the bathrooms, communal areas and garden all day if necessary.

Where can I park?

If you arrive before 4pm you can try and find some free roadside parking or you may have to pay and display. We have three car parks opposite us. The first two on the left as you come down the hill are camera operated and are strictly no overnight parking. The third, which is left just after the church and a little further down the hill, is the council long stay car park, signposted from the road with a P sign. If you arrive after 4pm this carpark is free till 9am. Before breakfast the next morning, we can try and help you find free roadside parking for your entire stay.

Can I use the kitchen?

Yes, the kitchen area is for guest use, but the cooking facilities, including the oven and hobs are for staff use only. Feel free to use the microwave, kettle and fridge- freezer if you wish to store your own food and drinks.

When is the Barbecue?

For the garden barbecue, we usually aim to have it at 5 o’clock on your second night with us. At this time, the sun still shines in the garden and it allows you plenty of time to go for wander and catch the evening sunset on the beach.

As we live on the wild Atlantic coast, these BBQ plans remain flexible though, as if the weather doesn’t look ideal we will try and change it for a better day.

Which days of the surf camp are the surf lessons?

You will have one 2-hr surf lesson each morning. Your first surf lesson will be in the morning after your arrival day, so on this day you can relax, enjoy your journey down and arrive anytime you like. Your last surf lesson will be in the morning before your departure. Usually we aim to do all the lessons at 9am each day, but this can change depending on tides and daily surf conditions.

How long are the surf lessons and can we surf longer?

Our surf lessons are 2 full hours from when we are changed and ready to head down to the beach. Each lesson includes a beach and ocean safety brief, followed by a gentle stretch routine. We then spend a good amount of time going through technique on the beach, with interactive land-based movement practices. For the rest of the lesson we are having fun in the waves, putting what we’ve learnt into action.

As part of the Base Surf Lodge family, you will have the option to stay down at the beach after the lesson or even head back down after lunch, if you are keen for more surf practice. The surfboards and wetsuits we give you at the start of your camp, are for you to use whenever you like during the days you are with us.
